CAKEooh begins

It always starts as a hobby.  A hobby that quickly gets out of control, and suddenly I’ve got containers of supplies, tools of the trade and I’m writing a blog.  How do I get to this point?

I’ve been baking for as long as I can remember, starting with my easy-bake oven, progressing to the dream of working in a professional kitchen.  My mom taught me the basics and showed me the joys of being a “from scratch” baker and cook.  In my teen years, I bypassed doing things from scratch and tried the “from the box” method.  While this was the simpler method, I quickly began to see the limitations of not being able to modify the recipes at will.  After recognizing the error of my ways, I went back to the process of not taking shortcuts and doing everything the hard way at least once.  To this day, I prefer making things from scratch whenever possible, but I am in NO WAY one of those foodie snobs that refuses to admit the benefits (and sometimes better tasting) ways of the box.

I’m the chick who brings homemade pastries, cookies and cakes to work (you always complain that I’m ruining your diet, yet you still eat my treats) on a regular basis.  I have fondant and gum paste in my pantry (because sometimes it’s easier to craft roses out of fondant than it is to whip up a batch of decorator’s butter cream).  I bake because I love to, not because I want you to think I’m awesome–It’s a way of life for me and losing myself in the art of frosting is the best way to ensure that I never, ever bring a gun to work.  Baking is my way of soothing the beast, and I apologize in advance for the extra pounds you’re going to gain.

So this is where it starts.  What began as a hobby, spurned on by my husband’s encouragement to make a website, and because my fabulous friend Lydia needed a flash project for her class, CAKEooh begins.
